On the last days of December I started watching a romantic comedy anime called “Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku“. Now this isn’t a typical cheesy romantic Hollywood style romantic comedy, it’s an adult themed animation from studio A1-Pictures based on a Josei manga written and drawn by Fujita.
Without spoiling too much, let’s say it’s about the romantic life of otakus. People who aren’t into anime/manga/videogames won’t catch many of the jokes, but if you are a fan of those subjects and enjoy a good light romantic reading you are in for some fun.
I recommend watching the anime series first and then dive right into the Kodansha Comics English translated manga, you’ll thank me later.
The animation is a typical A-1 project, competent and solid work as usual, the opening theme song “Fiction” by Sumika is a very upbeat and the introduction works really well for the series.
Both manga and anime share a wonderful if a bit silly story line, but in the end the characters are very detailed and likable.
As of January 2019 there are 3 volumes of the translated manga available, a 4th volume will be released near the end of 2019.
For a change, it’s really nice to watch adult characters dealing with love in a setting that isn’t the typical school/college cliche.
I recommend both the anime and manga if you got a bit of time to spare and enjoy a good love story.
A little side note for readers, expect more stuff like this on my blog.
