Blues Pills, a great band so go hear them when you can.
Kamelot is one of my favorite symphonic metal bands and it’s ex vocalist Roy Khan is still my favorite singer, but it wasn’t always like that.
The first time I heard him I really didn’t enjoy the band or his voice.
“Hum…This is not really my style of metal”… Those were my words to a friend at the time, my friend was in to guitars and loved Kamelot so he tried to do what all friends do. Make me a fan also because it’s always better when two friends enjoy the same band.
Walking home spinning that CD-R labeled Karma on my Discman just didn’t make me happy, I really hated the voice of Roy Khan and alkaline batteries were too expensive to spend on this band called Kamelot, this was until my friend made me sit on his bed and actually make me hear some songs on his quite amazing Sony mini Hi-Fi.
Seems I had a case of sucky headphones, in ear headphones at the time (2001) were expensive and had a really awful problem with sharp highs and believe me you won’t enjoy Kamelot if the only thing you can hear is the high pitched voice of Khan! Siting on his bed hearing the music via a decent pair of bookshelf loudspeakers made me change my opinion about Kamelot and about Khan’s voice. The man had an amazing voice for Metal and for Opera!
If my friend didn’t make me sit on his bed and actually make me pay attention to the songs I wouldn’t be a fan of Kamelot today. His Hi-Fi even if small presented the music with a dimension only headphones with a good crossfeed can actually deliver.
So next time you don’t enjoy a voice or a band, maybe you need to sit down with a pal and actually hear a pair of loudspeakers and put aside those bad headphones
